For the Kokuyo Design Award 2023
I envisioned designing a notebook that would facilitate generating ideas with a mindset of embracing and affirming challenges.
I believe it is crucial in thinking processes to view phenomena and events from various angles. It is essential to avoid the pitfall of perceiving only one aspect of something and generalizing it as the entirety.
The creation of this notebook stemmed from revisiting the seemingly negative occurrence of paper getting wet and transforming it into a positive aspect.
By wetting the edge of the notebook (the area where fingers are placed when flipping pages) about 10mm from the side, I discovered a beautiful, wave-like texture created by the undulations, along with improved grip due to these gaps. This aesthetically pleasing and functional edge serves as a reminder to view matters from a broader perspective when opening the notebook.
I conducted experiments by varying the types of paper and the conditions under which they were moistened.
